Bringing Low Country Culture to Screen in Thriller the Boo

Film Deco will unleash the The Boo Hag October 2022, starring renowned actors Basil Wallace and Lance Nichols in time for a spirited Halloween. The film highlights the Gullah Geechee culture and people – descendants of Africans who were brought to America as slaves – under a mythical lense.

In this ghostly film, acclaimed actor Basil Wallace steps on the scene as Jacob, caretaker of the property in the movie. Wallace has appeared in the thriller Blood Diamond (2006) with Leonardo DiCaprio and co-starred in Marked for Death (1990) with Steven Seagal. In addition, he has made numerous guest appearances on TV shows including NCIS: Los Angeles, The West Wing, and NYPD Blue.

“The team and everyone involved were great. Being on set with a talented group of individuals was a wonderful experience,” said Wallace. He also stated the movie is a lesson on consequences shaped by our actions. “The warning, ‘be careful what you wish for’ and to remember ‘you reap what you sow.’ In the end, Jacob received what he inevitably deserved.”

In addition, veteran actor Lance Nichols is the father of Asa, the film’s main lead. Nichols has starred in HBO Series’ Queen of the South (2019) and Treme (2010) and has been praised for his role as the preacher in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). He and his wife also co-own Lanzardis Productions, which trains young professionals interested in the entertainment industry.

“I’m a fan of the horror genre but seldom get cast or even asked to audition for one. I was sent the full script, read it, and knew I wanted to be a part of telling this story based on a Gullah Geechee folklore tale,” said Nichols. “In addition I was thrilled to reunite with a long time colleague of mine, Basil Wallace. I think it’s going to be a hair raising, keep you on the edge of your seat drama.”

Centered around a demon that poses as a beautiful woman during the day and later reveals herself as a wretched creature at night terrorizing and killing her victims as they sleep, The Boo Hag brings this folklore of Low Country culture to the screen.

“We have a wonderful cast who ground the story in a day-to-day reality – a couple entering into the second phase of their marriage. It’s so great to share a story about adults trying to make it work, dealing with issues of class structure and childbirth, sustaining a marriage, and adapting in a new environment where our heroine is a fish out of water,” said film director, Jeremiah Kipp.

Kipp’s directing credits also include Slapface (2021) starring August Maturo, Black Wake (2018) starring Tom Sizemore, Pickup (2017) starring Jim True-Frost, The Sadist (2015) starring Tom Savini, Mastermind (2014) starring Chris Sarandon, and many more.
