ARMY OF THE DEAD 1 750x422 - 'Planet of the Dead' is Now the Title for Zack Snyder's 'Army of the Dead' Sequel

Zack Snyder’s zombie heist horror adventure movie Army of the Dead is quickly becoming a major franchise. With a prequel anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas in the works and a live-action prequel hitting Netflix this Friday called Army of Thieves, fans of the first film have plenty to look forward to.

Now, the visionary filmmaker is looking to expand his Zombie Cinematic Universe (the ZCU?) even further. Snyder recently told Inverse that the follow-up sequel will be called Planet of the Dead.

The sequel may also feature the character of Dieter played by Matthias Schweighöfer, who will also star in the new prequel. Apparently, Snyder has been thinking a lot about the safe-cracking character from Army of the Dead. What was his fate after the safe door closed at the end of the film?

Snyder wonders, “Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left. I won’t tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2—aka Planet of the Dead—but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”

The sequel sounds like it will be told on an even grander scale than the first film, with locations in Mexico City and possibly other famous cities around the world.

Snyder goes on to mention his love for the zombie genre, telling Inverse, “Our tone is that we love those aspects of it, so we want to shine a light on the things that we love. We want the audience [involved] in our love affair with it. We say, ‘Look, we all know you love it too—you, the audience, and us.’”

Army of the Dead had over 70 million household views in its first four weeks of release and was No. 1 overall in over 70 countries. Obviously, the team at Netflix know what to do when they have a hit on their hands. The impact value of the ZCU (I’m calling it that, now) looks like it will continue to grow into a potentially long running horror franchise for the streamer. (Too bad our beloved and deeply missed George A. Romero couldn’t get in on some of the spoils.)
