Netflix The Last Stand

The top-charting thriller on Netflix globally is an underrated gem from horror auteur Kim Jee-woon. Horror fans might recognize Jee-woon as the man behind such horror classics as A Tale of Two Sisters, and I Saw the Devil. Jee-woon’s American debut came in 2013 with the release of the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle The Last Stand. Now, the movie is charting on Netflix for the second week in a row. Check out the trailer below.

In The Last Stand,The sheriff of a sleepy border town finds his quiet life interrupted when a drug boss escapes FBI custody and flees straight toward his turf.”

Schwarzenegger’s Sheriff Ray Owens is the aforementioned hero who must make his titular last stand against an encroaching threat, marking his first starring role since Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines a decade before. While The Last Stand was met with a mixed critical reception upon release, it nonetheless yields plenty of Schwarzenegger’s action bravado and Jee-woon’s tense horror bonafides. Check out what fans are saying about the movie on Netflix below:

The Last Stand also stars Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker, Jaimie Alexander, and Luis Guzmán, among others. Fans can’t seem to get enough of the movie. Like The Snowman this week, Netflix is the prime platform for critical misfires to have their go at securing a new audience. With a lower barrier to entry (that is, not having to buy tickets at the theater), action thrillers like The Last Stand can find a new audience eager for pulpy midnight thrills. And, better still, if The Last Stand works for you, don’t forget to check out another Schwarzenegger genre-adjacent vehicle—David Ayer’s Sabotage. It’s like Agatha Christie but bloodier and with FBI agents.

What do you think? Did you catch The Last Stand when it was first released? Where does it rank among Kim Jee-woon’s filmography? What about Schwarzenegger’s? Let me know over on Twitter @ChadisCollins!
