Angela Lansbury, a three-time Oscar nominee and five-time Tony Award winner, has passed away at the age of 96.
Lansbury’s death was announced by her family, who issued a statement on the passing of the legendary actress. “The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday,” the statement reads (per Deadline).
Lansbury’s career in Hollywood and Broadway is one of the most celebrated and legendary of any actor today. Perhaps most well-known for her role in the hit television series Murder, She Wrote, Lansbury did just about all you can in the world of acting.
Throughout her time in Hollywood, Lansbury earned three Oscar nominations and 18 total Emmy nominations, including being honored with an honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2013.
In her acting career, Lansbury appeared in a litany of classic films, including 1944’s Gaslight, 1945’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1962’s The Manchurian Candidate, and even animated films, as she voiced the role of Mrs. Potts in the classic Beauty and the Beast.
In the world of Broadway, Lansbury was just as decorated, having won six total Tony Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award) for her various roles. During her time on Broadway, Lansbury appeared in a ton of classic productions, including Gypsy, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The King and I, Mame, Driving Miss Daisy, and more.
