Another ‘Encanto’ Is ‘A Question of When and Not If’

If you have or spend any amount of time with children, you no doubt are very familiar with Encanto, Disney’s latest insidious earworm-generating animated feature. The film didn’t do much in theaters last year, but its impossibly catchy soundtrack, with songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, have become ubiquitous anywhere young people congregate and have access to an Alexa-enabled device. (Seriously; whoever invented the Echo clearly did not have children who bask in the freedom of being able to listen to whatever they want on repeat for hours on end.)

With Encanto becoming Disney’s most talked about movie since at least Moana (which also had Lin-Manuel Miranda music, come to think of it) there’s already a growing demand for a sequel. And apparently Miranda — who also worked on Encanto’s story — is on board with making one of some kind.

In an interview with Collider, Miranda said “there’s an appetite to further explore the Madrigal family” and said another Encanto is “a question of when and not if, and what form that will take.” He added:

Is that another movie? Is that a series? Is that a stage adaptation where we have a little more time, because stage shows are generally an hour longer than movies? And we haven’t had conversations as to what form that will take, but I mean, yeah, I’d be down to continue to explore that …

Miranda also notes that the Madrigal family has so many characters, and so many gifts and magical abilities, that there are a lot of places to explore — and, given where the first film ends, with a “more fully realized version of themselves,” a lot of potential for a sequel. And call me crazy, but I have a feeling Disney will want to make one, whether as a film or a television series on Disney+. Just a hunch!

In the meantime, Encanto is now streaming on Disney+.
