Typically, that form or fashion is another television show; a revival or a reboot or hey, even an animated version. (You ever seeThe New Adventures of Gilligan?Thatlovable scampis never getting off that island!) Once in a while, though, the fanbase for a show gets so loud and so annoying that a studio will shunt it from television to movies, hoping to reap major box-office bucks whilegiving viewers their favorite characterson a scale they’ve neverwitnessed before.

Perhaps rarest — and therefore most interesting — of all is a show that ends on television but then magicallyreturns to life as a film. These films are usually designed to conclude years of storylines that a moviegoing audience may not even know. But sometimestheyprove so popular that they can drive demand for more sequels, or a return to TV and more episodes.

Replacing a main character is usually bad news for a TV show, but Bewitched went through with it anyway, recasting Darrin Stephens, the husband of the central witch, Samantha. Actor Dick York, who originally played Darrin for the show’s first five seasons, was injured on the set of the Western movie They Came to Cordura (before he was cast in Bewitched), requiring a lengthy hospitalization and resulting in a degenerative spinal condition and a lifelong addiction to painkillers. Being on set for long hours was difficult for him throughout the filming of Bewitched, and when he collapsed in the middle of shooting towards the end of the fifth season, he decided to part ways with the show. Dick Sargent was later cast to play Darrin for the next three seasons until the show’s cancellation.
