5 Horror Sequels That Are Actually Better Than the Original

master mentalism tricks

Horror fans learn early to flinch at the words “Part 2.” We have been burned. The sequel usually means a smaller budget, a bigger body count that somehow matters less, and a killer who has stopped being scary and started being a mascot. We brace for diminishing returns because that is what the genre trains us to expect.

And then, every so often, a franchise gets a second swing and connects. Sometimes a new director shows up. Sometimes the same one finally figures out the assignment. Either way you hit play expecting more of the same, and instead you get the movie the first one was trying to be. Oh. That is what this was supposed to be.

These are five of those. Five follow-ups that took a decent idea, a rough draft, or in a couple of cases an outright dud, and turned it into the thing the franchise actually needed. I am not here to tell you the originals are worthless. I am here to tell you which one I would keep if the shelf only had room for one. Let’s count down.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

The Purge sold us one of the best what-if premises the genre has coughed up this century. One night a year, all crime is legal, murder included, and society calls it therapy. Then James DeMonaco took that city-sized idea and locked it inside a single suburban house with Ethan Hawke and a home security system. Good tension. Wrong scale. The three million dollar budget shows, and so does the ceiling it puts on the concept.

Anarchy opens the front door. DeMonaco came back for the sequel and finally let us out onto the street, into a Los Angeles where the sirens have stopped meaning help is coming. Frank Grillo walks through it like the only man who read the manual, and the movie becomes the sweaty, roaming survival picture you were already running in your head the first time you heard the words “The Purge.” Gangs in matching masks. A convoy of rich people who bought their way into the fun. Regular folks just trying to reach sunrise.

If I get one Purge on the shelf, it is this one. The first movie pitched the night. Anarchy actually spends it outside.

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

Quick honesty before the fight starts. This one is a prequel, and it came out after the movie it improves on, so we are bending the rules of the list a little. I do not care, and by the end of this entry you will not either.

The 2014 Ouija is the kind of PG-13 studio horror that evaporates while you are still in the parking lot. Pretty cast, jump scares on a timer, a board game with a marketing budget. It made a fortune, which is the only reason anyone greenlit a follow-up. Then Mike Flanagan walked in, set the story in 1967, and turned a Hasbro tie-in into a genuinely sad, genuinely creepy ghost story about a family running a fake seance business.

Elizabeth Reaser holds the whole thing together as a widowed mother, and Lulu Wilson, playing her possessed youngest, does that thing where a child actor becomes the single most upsetting object in the frame. Flanagan makes you care about these people before he starts hurting them. Most of these franchises never bother. This is the guy who would go on to make half of your favorite Netflix horror shows, and you can watch him figuring it out right here.

Watch the first one only if you are curious how low the bar was set.

Annabelle: Creation (2017)

Annabelle is the most recognizable face in the entire Conjuring universe, and her first solo movie did almost nothing with her. The 2014 Annabelle took the creepiest doll in modern horror, the one that stole scenes just by sitting still in The Conjuring, and dropped her into a flat, forgettable haunted apartment. It made money anyway. Recognizable objects usually do.

Creation is the apology. David F. Sandberg, fresh off Lights Out, backs the timeline up to a dollmaker’s farmhouse full of orphaned girls and builds real dread out of empty hallways, a stairlift, and a bedsheet. He understands that the scariest thing you can do with a doll is refuse to show you what it is doing. The set pieces are patient. The house feels lived in. The scares land because he lets the quiet stretch until you start bargaining with it.

Yes, it is another prequel. This franchise treats chronology like a polite suggestion. Keep up.

Sandberg has said he did not want to just make the first movie one more time, and you can feel that decision in every frame. He gave the doll the movie her reputation always promised.

Bride of Chucky (1998)

Time to lose some friends. Child’s Play is the better horror movie, full stop. The 1988 original is a genuinely nasty little thriller, a possessed doll picture with the patience to keep Chucky half hidden and let you wonder for a while whether the kid is just disturbed. It is scary in a way the sequels abandoned almost immediately.

I am keeping Bride of Chucky anyway.

By 1998 Chucky had been quipping his way through four movies and everybody knew his face. Pretending he was still a creeping menace would have been a lie, so director Ronny Yu did the smart thing and leaned all the way into the joke. Enter Tiffany. Jennifer Tilly gives one of the great horror performances nobody ever hands an award to, purring and scheming and stabbing her way through a gothic road movie that finally admits this franchise is a comedy with a body count. The doll effects got nastier. The one liners got sharper. Chucky stopped being frightening and became fun, and Bride is the film that made peace with it.

I am not telling you it is scarier than the original. I am telling you it is the one I reach for. Fight me in the comments. You know where they are.

Evil Dead II (1987)

Ask a room full of horror fans to name a sequel that beats the original and this is the one that gets shouted first, because it is correct. The Evil Dead is holy text. Sam Raimi and a few friends built it out of pocket change and stubbornness, three hundred and seventy five thousand dollars of grinding, mean, homemade terror that basically invented a whole strain of cabin in the woods horror. Respect it forever. It is a small miracle the thing exists at all.

Then Raimi got a real budget and made it again. Better, funnier, completely unhinged. Evil Dead II is where the whole idea snaps into focus. Bruce Campbell stops being a scared guy in a cabin and becomes Ash, chin first, chainsaw hand and all, delivering slapstick and screaming at his own possessed hand in the same breath. The effects go from scrappy to gloriously deranged. Raimi’s camera flies through the woods like it has a personal grudge. That impossible rhythm where a scene is terrifying and hysterical at the exact same second, the thing the entire franchise would be built on, gets perfected right here.

The first film is the spark. This is the fire. If I only keep one Evil Dead, it is not a discussion.
