Dark Secrets of the 1960s Batman Television Show

When supervillains come to harm Gotham City, Batman and his trusted side-kick Robin are the only two people who can be trusted for destroying all evil plans and protect the city. In William Dozier’s Batman, the fictional superhero and his partner Robin are constantly uncovering criminal schemes and sinful plots while championing the cause of simple day-to-day issues, such as the importance of wearing seat belts and eating veggies.

As popular as Batman maybe today, before the Batman series premiered on ABC in 1966, the comic book was not in a great place. Marvel had been introducing one culturally-relevant superhero after another, pulling the normal DC crowd towards itself. Though Superman still enjoyed some popularity, primarily due to the 1950s series Adventures of Superman, Batman was slowly trickling into oblivion.

The 1960s Batman series, which stars Adam West as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Burt Ward as Dicky Grayson/Robin, played a key role in reviving the Batman series. The 120-episode series also popularized the four iconic Batman villains: Catwoman, Penguin, Joker and Riddler. While the other three villains had made a significant number of appearances in the comic books, Riddler appeared only thrice in the books and the credit for his popularity goes entirely to this 1960s Batman TV series.

Even if we forget the impact that the series had on the revival of the character as well as the many Batman movies that have been made since, Batman, in itself, was a fun show to watch. It was a series that both the kids as well the parents could watch together and enjoy. The acting was excellent, the writing was always clever, and the production design was exemplary for the time.

The show may be decades old now but its charm is still hard to resist. Forget the contemporary Caped Crusaders, if you have seen the Batman TV series, you will agree that Adam West, as the straight-laced Batman, was the ultimate charmer. The 1960s Batman series was more of a comedy than the drama that subtly mocked the superheroes as well the then-prevalent Father Knows Best mentality that had plagued America since the 1950s. The show was entertaining then and it is entertaining even now.

In this video, Facts Verse will tell you 15 things you didn’t know about Adam West’s Batman. So get comfortable for this is going to be a fun watch.
