Horror in the High Desert

Two of the scariest movies of the century are streaming free on Tubi. Dutch Marich’s Horror in the High Desert and its follow-up Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva are both available to stream. I can’t recommend either enough. Marich successfully blends found-footage thrills with a world all his own. The films are liminal, regularly scary, and packed with enough dense lore to make every horror nerd blush. Plus, if you’re a fan, the most recent entry, this year’s Horror in the High Desert 3: Firewatch, recently arrived On Demand to rent. Take my word for it—it’s worth getting lost in the desert.

Per Tubi: Three years after an outdoorsman disappeared, his friends discuss the events leading up to his vanishing and the horrifying result of his fate.

In our review of the second film in the series last year, we wrote, “After the first film, Marich has grown as a filmmaker and expertly understands how to use found footage to create a uniquely terrifying experience. If you’re looking to be just plain scared, Horror In The High Desert 2: Minerva should skyrocket to the top of your watchlist.” It’s really with Minerva that the series takes off. The first has one of the scariest beats I’ve seen in some time, though that scare is reserved for the end. While deliberately paced, the true promise of the first is actualized with its sequel.

That, of course, says nothing of the third entry in the series (with a reported fourth on the way). In our review of the third film this year, we wrote, “In terms of scares, Marich really loves making you just sit in the world’s most uncomfortable situations until your stomach starts hurting. While Horror In The High Desert 3 doesn’t have as many jaw-dropping scares as the second, the tension-building is better than ever to the point that I felt nauseous,” concluding that the series keeps “getting better with each entry.”

If you haven’t checked out the series yet, it should be at the top of your list. I promise it will be one of your new favorite horror trilogies. The series has been a particular hit with horror fans online.
