The Clownjuring – directed by Jody S. Dean, and starring Anthony Dean, Jesse Leppert and Jayce Dean
Synopsis: When a young couple decide to play a game known as The Clownjuring, they awaken the vicious souls of three sadistic serial killer clowns from the depths of Hell.
The absolute beauty of independent horror is that you don’t have to have a colossal budget, or salary-heavy stars to showcase for the sake of views – just put everything you’ve got out there on film, heart & soul, blood & guts, skin & bone and you’ll gain the respect and admiration of the masses. That is the innate simplicity and utter beauty of this genre: participation can be in a pedestrian fashion and you’ll have an audience, be it minuscule or teeming with ardent fanatics, chewing through their faceguards to sink their teeth into the flesh of what has been faithfully crafted.
With “The Clownjuring”, from Director Jody S. Dean, we get to see the beauty of pure practical FX, and it pushes the film towards an edge where even with its back against the wall, it comes back swinging for the fences in a display that many fans of murderous clown follies will devour. The plot is as easy as 1-2-3: a couple looking for a little harmless entertainment on a Friday night start to play a game, and the result is a gaping portal that has opened directly from the blazing hot south (no, not Atlanta) – I’m talking about HELL! As the seal to the underworld has been cracked, three of the most heinous, barbaric and totally savage killer clowns have escaped, and will now make this Earth their personal art canvas to paint with the masses’ blood, and lucky for us all, we get a front row seat.
The kills like I mentioned are the stuff of graphic beauty, and it works as a balancing point when you take into consideration the low budget and underwhelming portrayals from the remainder of the cast, but the clowns themselves act as if they’ve done this killin’ stuff before, which makes their actions all the more inhuman in nature. The bottom line is this: if you’re a horror fan looking for a stripped down slaughter-fest that’s not afraid to bury its minuses in a plethora of plasmatic pluses, then “The Clownjuring” is meant for you – for horror fans, by horror fans…and that’s absolutely okay with me.
