In the course of his investigation, Gittes discovers a connection to his own past. A troubled production that became an infamous flop, The Two Jakes, written by original Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne, is a beautifully melancholic tale about the perils of living in the past. The final line of Chinatown is iconic, but the final line of The Two Jakes — “It never goes away” — is arguably even more haunting.
