Legendary joke-a-minute comedy Airplane! is very obviously a parody of the absurd disaster films Hollywood was enamored with in the 1960s and ’70s, including humor at the expense of a number of famous airplane- and travel-based plots. But it’s also technically a direct remake of one specific film: Paramount’s 1957 disaster film Zero Hour (which was itself a remake of a Canadian television play Flight into Danger).

Airplane! takes many of its plot and character elements from Zero Hour, including its traumatized war veteran ex-pilot protagonist, a plane full of food poisoned passengers, and a nail-biter climactic landing. The only real difference is one of these films plays everything very straight, and the other is one of the silliest movies ever made.
