Craig Melvin confirms when Savannah Guthrie will return on Today
Craig Melvin ran the Today show on Monday, October 12, in Savannah Guthrie’s absence. Melvin shared that Guthrie will be back on Tuesday, October 13’s broadcast. However, the reason behind her sudden absence was not revelead. The Australian-American broadcaster previously went on a two-week break in September. For the unaware, she took a two-month leave of absence after her mom, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared (via USA Today).
After her comeback, Savannah has taken brief leaves due to various reasons. She addressed in June how focusing on her job amid her mother’s disappearance wasn’t easy. “It’s really hard to come back. I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together,” Savannah said on Today with Jenna Bush Hager.
The 54-year-old continued she’s “happy to be back” on the show as the job gives her “a little respite” during the day and brings her “a lot of joy” because the people she works with are like a family. Still, it’s “not easy” for her.
“I don’t think if I had any other kind of job, I would have even tried to come back, but I just felt like, ‘Well, what else should I do?,” she explained. “And my mom would have said the same, like, ‘Honey, just keep going, just keep going.’ And so I am,” Savannah added.
The news anchor further said, “I know maybe people wonder, ‘What’s going on? How is she able to do that job? Is she not thinking about it? Did she forget?’ No. Never.” She continued, “I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home.”
