The official announcement was accompanied by an imaginative video with a title ‘American Idol University.’ The ad serves as a virtual time machine, taking the viewers through the years of the show, showing the past superstars who have been ‘educated’ by the show. The promo is a picture love letter to the brand, which is intended to excite the public by reminding them of the great talents that have been produced through the years.
In the early seasons, stars like Clay Aiken are depicted, and the video also humorously refers to his devoted ‘Claymates.’ The promo eventually reaches its peak with the grand revelation: the presentation of the ‘Class of 2026.’ To make a point, this prospective bunch is going to the great hall of fame and the contest is really confident that this season will be one of the all-time best. The new season is generating significant buzz.
The announcement about the competition’s return was immediately and strongly met with public’s positive reactions. A person very well summed up the whole atmosphere by saying that ‘Idol is back which means everything is perfect in the world.’ Someone else just stated that they were ‘already crying,’ and this made them wonder about the impact that the very long series has on the viewers’ emotions.
Nostalgia was without a doubt the most important element in the comments. AIdol’s noise making power in the music industry was mentioned by more than a few people. One reader illustrated the success with a timeline of events and based on his viewings ‘There must be 120+ Idol alumni who have made the Billboard charts. I am sure about 24 of them being Grammy nominees. That’s a surreal legacy!’ This fact-based commendation started a thread of consensus and some people even went to the extent of saying that it was the only talent competition that was, in fact, so recognized for its power of producing famous singers.
Mentioning specific alumni by name resulted in overwhelming love for them. Carrie Underwood was the one and only repeatedly pointed to as the most talented of all the graduates of the show, and this was a feeling that resonated with Simon Cowell’s famous early pronouncement about her potential. Clay Aiken also received a good deal of fame, the official account keeping a fun lookout on him and acknowledging the stronghold that the Claymate fandom has. The emotional return of the show highlights such fan connections.
Unavoidably, the new season comes with audacious predictions. One excited viewer said, ‘Look at this idol class, their names will ever be inscribed in the history books!’ A response was already in place didn’t let the funny and light side of the reality be forgotten, mentioning that every year similar statements are made, yet the hope to discover a lot more fresh and great talent remained strong and was still present throughout the talk.
The whole marketing concept of ‘American Idol University’ was very much in keeping with the times. The ABC official account took the opportunity to jest about their “enrollment” and a fan said he had his “doctorate” from that university, implying the business of clever marketing was at work. It not only managed to turn the new season into yet another competition but also into the next winning step in the process of building the great legacy. The returning judges will be a key part of this legacy.
