Best Medicine Bosses Talk Martin & Louisas Unexplainable Connection on Display for Eden

Martin (Josh Charles) may be fooling himself when it comes to his love life — he’s with Eden (Eliza Coupe) but has very obvious feelings for Louisa (Abigail Spencer) — but how much longer can that continue? In the latest Best Medicine episode, Eden becomes privy to key information about her boyfriend. TV Insider spoke with executive producers Liz Tuccillo and Rodney Ferrell about that and more. Martin pushes his aunt, Sarah (Annie Potts), to get to know Eden, and she does so with a bottle of wine … and by telling the other woman all about her nephew’s connection (and kiss!) with Louisa once she hears that he may be moving back to Boston. Eden then rushes off to find Martin and Louisa when she hears they’re off together — looking for who stole things from the pharmacy, including Louisa’s trigger shot for her egg retrieval. And so she has a front row seat to Martin being the one to calm down Louisa when she panics about going through with the process.

Below, executive producers Liz Tuccillo and Rodney Ferrell break down that moment and more.

The prank with the ketchup was awful. Poor Martin. It’s also something from Doc Martin. Why have them do it and why did they do it? Was it to have that moment of Louisa telling him about how it was their way of saying they accept him for him to realize that he does fit in with this town leading to that prank at the end? Was that just all part of building that?

Liz Tuccillo: Yeah, we really wanted the episode to talk about there are different ways to show you accept somebody, and one of the ways you show is by teasing them. We talk a lot about bullying and negative teasing, but there’s also a way where a town, a community can tease you to let you know that they’re OK with whatever your issues are.

Eden’s really pushing Martin to move back to Boston, and he seems to be saying what she wants to hear, but there also seems to be part of him that’s disconnected from that in a way when they’re talking about it in the house and everything. And now that Eden knows about Louisa, is that something that she might begin to pick up on for Martin? How aware is Eden going to be about how Martin’s really feeling about Boston?

Rodney Ferrell: Well, there’s going to become a point where she’s very aware in this season. There’s going to be no mystery of what she figures out at some point, and there might just be a confrontation on all of this at some point where Martin really has to make a decision because there’s no choice but to make a decision.

Speaking of Eden knowing about Martin and Louisa, thank you for that Eden and Sarah lunch. That was such a delight, and Sarah is so calculating in the way that she tells her about the kiss and everything. Was Sarah at all open to getting to know Eden like she should get to know the girlfriend of her nephew, or was she always going in there with this plan to try to push her out?

Tuccillo: No, I think that she was trying. I don’t think she was ever planning on them being besties, but I think presenting a bottle of wine was her way of saying, “I’m going to try to get through this the best I can.” And then when Eden sort of says her plans to take Martin away from her, that’s when the clause came out.

It was just such a good scene.

Tuccillo: You put two brilliant comedic actresses together, it’s just the most fun ever.

And just a subtle comedic moment was Eden coming in with the switchblade when someone breaks in, just all ready to go, and you’re like, “Yeah, that’s Eden.”

Tuccillo: Eden always takes things a little step too far.

Eden’s able to talk Martin through helping the guy who was shot with the blood. That was a nice moment for them, but then you then had Martin able to calm Louisa down to take the trigger shot, and Eden sees that. So how is that going to affect all parties involved going forward?

Tuccillo: I don’t think that one particular moment affects everybody, but I think it’s just planting another seed of that there is this triangle that Eden is now becoming aware of.

And are Martin and Louisa just continuing to ignore the feelings that are obviously there, or is that maybe making them more aware that they maybe can’t do that?

Ferrell: I don’t think they’re ignoring. In that moment, I don’t think it’s about like, “Oh, I have feelings for you.” It’s just that we’re witnessing a connection that they have that’s kind of unexplainable, and it’s really what brings them constantly back together. In that moment, they’re not thinking about it, but we see it. We see how connected they are.
