At the 2026 Emmy Awards, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were tapped to announce the last award of the night, Outstanding Comedy Series. In a rare turn of events for an awards ceremony, the show was running ahead of schedule, and so the two stars had clearly been told to stretch out their presentation. This led to a rambling, unscripted interaction between the two stars intended to promote the Apple TV show Brothers, but instead raising serious concerns about whether the McConaughey/Harrelson comedy series, starring them as “themselves,” would be a mess.
The good news is that Brothers‘s eight episodes aren’t nearly as painful as that three minutes and 41 seconds of awards show flailing were. The bad news is that the first season of the show does still feel a little endless. “Based on a true rumor,” the series explores the true-life possibility that Harrelson and McConaughey aren’t just very close friends, but actual blood relations.
We’ll use first names here when referring to the fictional versions of these characters, to avoid any confusion with the actors’ real-life selves. In terms of the facts: Harrelson’s father was famously a convicted contract killer who died in prison. In 2023, McConaughey said that it was possible for his mother to have known Charles Harrelson (biblically) around the time of his conception. (He was also already teasing the possibility of this series back then.)

However grounded in truth it might be, Brothers plays the “true rumor”‘s authenticity for suspense over the course of the season, which officially kicks off when Woody’s daughter Olive (Highdee Kuan) faces some romantic woes. Wanting to cheer the other Harrelsons up, Woody decides to bring his whole clan, including wife Joy (Brittany Ishibashi) and adopted daughter Kai (Oona Yaffe), down to Austin, Texas so they can hang out with Matthew and his family on the McConaughey ranch.
Matthew and his family, including wife Valentina (Natalie Martinez) and oldest son Wyatt (Nolan Almeida), aren’t necessarily thrilled by the invasion but take it in stride, especially since Matthew’s a little distracted by his tentative plans to run for governor of Texas. Woody’s also distracted, though, by the possibility that he and Matthew might be related, leading to plenty of True Detective references as Woody (with some help from his daughter) attempts to figure out the truth. If you guessed that this subplot gets played out slowly over the course of the first season, you guessed right.
And because there are eight episodes to fill, the two families also have to work through a series of stale sitcom-esque antics together, including an awkward hunting trip, the arrival of a new puppy, and Matthew and Woody fumbling their efforts to celebrate their loving wives on Valentine’s Day.
Brothers (Apple TV)
The freshest bits are inspired by the personas of its two stars, including a frank acknowledgement of Woody’s stoner lifestyle. (Considering that recreational marijuana use is not currently legal in Texas, this does become an issue at one point, but it gets swept under the rug quickly.) The less inspired moments push into into territory indistinguishable from decades’ worth of hapless dad cliches, the only difference being that Woody and Matthew happen to be more famous than your Raymonds and King of Queens.
It could be said that the difference between an actor and a movie star is that an actor transforms themself for a role, while a movie star adapts a role to fit within a certain range of their established persona. This means that movie stars are well-equipped to play themselves on screen — or at least, they’re easily able to embody the undistilled persona we associate with them.
That’s a long way of saying that both McConaughey and Harrelson handle their roles on the show with a natural ease born from decades of acting on camera, with a certain degree of willingness to be the butt of the jokes. The show’s funniest moments often come at their expense, whether it be deep-cut callbacks to their past roles or satirizing those aforementioned personas.
Accordingly, both actresses playing their wives often fall into similar stereotypical traps, though other members of the supporting cast get more of a chance to shine: Highdee Kuan nicely matches Harrelson’s energy as his eldest daughter, and Holland Taylor knows how to sell a punchline. Also, Lisa Gilroy plays Matthew’s new campaign manager with a hilarious fierceness that doesn’t quite match the tone of the rest of the show, but is reliably quite funny. (Between the shows Running Point, The Studio, The Paper, Scrubs, Shrinking, A Man on the Inside, and Golden Axe, Gilroy feels like she’s everywhere right now — someone definitely worth paying attention to.)
Ultimately, this is a show about two men coming to understand their bond better, and there’s an underlying sweetness to the emphasis Brothers places on Woody and Matthew’s relationship. Yes, the two men do bear a physical resemblance (something the opening credits emphasize with a crap-ton of side-by-side photos of the two). Whether or not they’re actually related, though — does that really change anything between them?
It’s a question, frankly, that could have been explored more successfully as a feature-length film, not an eight-episode series. Without the stereotypical hijinks that drives the plot of half the episodes, it’d be a tighter, character-focused story that would still leave room for all of the best Dazed and Confused references. As is, Brothers definitely has some good laughs. But not enough to sustain eight full episodes.
