Bury the Devil Trailer Locks a Night Nurse in a One-Take Possession (Exclusive)

master mentalism tricks

Possession movies love a locked door. Decades of them have been built on the simple cruelty of putting someone in a room with a demon and quietly removing the exits. Bury the Devil wants to remove one more. The editing.

The new international trailer for Adam O’Brien’s film makes its pitch in the first few seconds, then spells it out with a title card that reads “REAL-TIME POSSESSION HORROR.” The whole movie plays out in real time, in a single continuous take. No cut to spare you. Nowhere for the camera to look away.

What the trailer shows

The setup starts almost ordinary. A nurse named Julia arrives for a night shift with an elderly dementia patient in an old, dimly lit house. The camera stays close to her and moves when she moves, gliding through rooms instead of cutting between them.

Then the night curdles. The house gets darker. The patient gets stranger, then aggressive, then physical. The trailer flashes occult drawings, scrawled handwriting, symbols that look a great deal like a pentagram, and an old analog tape recorder among the things Julia starts turning up.

One shot lands harder than the rest, an image of the old woman wearing an expression that is no longer quite hers. “Nothing stays buried forever,” the trailer offers, which is the sort of promise that never works out for the person holding the flashlight.

I will leave the nastier reveals where the trailer left them.

The single-take gamble

The demon is not the interesting part. Possession horror runs on one of the oldest toolkits in the genre. Odd behavior. Religious and occult imagery. A house that turns into a trap. A body becoming something it should not be. None of that is new, and O’Brien clearly knows it.

The whole movie plays out in real time, designed to appear as a single continuous shot. Editing is usually a horror director’s sharpest weapon. The hard cut, the smash to black, the reveal you build in the cutting room. O’Brien is setting that weapon down on purpose.

So the tension has to come from harder places. Blocking. Camera movement. Off-screen space. Sound. The timing of actors who cannot fix a blown beat in post. What the frame lets you see, and what it keeps just out of reach.

None of this is proof it works. It is a trailer, not the film. But the ambition is the reason to watch. Give up the cut, and every scare has to be earned live, in front of you, with the meter running.

Where and when to watch

Bury the Devil is directed by Adam O’Brien, whose last feature was Mom, and written by John Petrizzi and Brad Hodson. Dawn Ford, Emmanuelle Lussier Martinez and Bill Rowat star. It runs roughly 85 minutes, which is a lean stretch to spend trapped in a haunted house with no edits to catch your breath.

The film premiered at FrightFest Glasgow back in March. Brainstorm Media took U.S. rights out of a batch of international deals handled by Blue Finch, with Black Fawn Distribution handling Canada. It is also the first chapter of a planned trilogy, and a prequel is already in the works.

Bury the Devil arrives in select theaters and on VOD on August 21.

If you are going to strand a nurse in a house with a demon for 85 unbroken minutes, refusing to let the camera blink is a genuinely mean way to do it. I mean that as a compliment.
