Today, there are countless movies like American Graffiti, dramedies about groups of teenagers on the cusp of adulthood, trying to sort out their lives to a soundtrack of pop hits. That’s because when American Graffiti did it for the first time — after almost everyone in Hollywood told George Lucas it was a bad idea — it became one of the biggest movies of the decade.

You can’t blame executives for turning Lucas down at first; his first movie, THX 1138 was a coldly confounding sci-fi movie that flopped at the box office. Lucas shrewdly pivoted toward nostalgia, the impulse that would fuel much of the rest of his career, and found a massive and appreciative audience eager to look back with him at “the good old days.”
