Scream 3 should have plenty of material to target; it’s the entry in the franchise all about trilogies. In practice, it turns out the “rules” of trilogies aren’t quite that codified, and they’re not that different from sequels. As a result, a lot of Scream 3’s satire is as dull as a prop knife. After three movies in five years, the franchise was starting to run out of creative juice. (In this one, they even resort of allowing Ghostface to imitate any person’s voice — including a dead woman! That’s just stretching the “rules” too far.) No wonder the fourth film took more than a decade to emerge from Woodsboro.

Part of the brilliance of The Silence of the Lambs rests on Anthony Hopkins’ spine-tingling performance as psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. But Hopkins didn’t immediately jump to take the role — it took some convincing. Reportedly, Sean Connery was the first actor to receive the script, but he turned the role down because it was too “disgusting” and he “wouldn’t dream of playing the part” of a serial killer. Director Jonathan Demme allegedly also considered Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, and John Lithgow for the role.
