Gizmo is back on screen, and the wait for everything around him just got another ten months. Warner Bros. has moved Gremlins 3 from November 19, 2027 to October 6, 2028, and sent the news out with a short teaser on its X account carrying a date card that reads “10.6.28. Only In Theaters.” The clip is the first look at the new Gizmo. It has not gone up on the studio’s YouTube channel, so there is no official embed to watch yet.
The move is part of a wider reshuffle. DC Studios’ Dynamic Duo slid three months in the same announcement, from June 20, 2028 to September 22, 2028. Warner Bros. gave no reason for either shift.
A Christmas Movie Moves Into Halloween
October 6 is a Friday four weeks before Halloween, which is the most interesting thing about the new date. Gremlins is a Christmas movie. Billy gets Gizmo as a Christmas present, the town is strung with lights, and Phoebe Cates delivers the single bleakest Santa Claus monologue in studio comedy. Putting the third film in the first week of October reads it as a creature feature first and a holiday movie second, which is how the merchandise has always treated it anyway.
Chris Columbus directs, which closes a long loop. Columbus wrote the 1984 original as a spec script early in his career, before Home Alone and before the Harry Potter films, and Joe Dante turned it into something far stranger than the page. Steven Spielberg executive produces, the role he held on both earlier films. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the pair behind Final Destination Bloodlines, wrote the script with Columbus.
Gizmo Is the Only Thing Announced
Ten months after Warner Bros. put the project on its slate, the film still has a number instead of a title, no announced cast, and no released plot. Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates have not been confirmed to return. Neither has anyone else. A teaser that shows Gizmo and a date is, at this point, the entire public face of the movie.
Columbus has been clear about one thing. “I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI,” he said in a Collider interview, adding that he did not expect to use much computer imagery at all. For a franchise whose two films are held up as high-water marks of practical creature work, that is the commitment most likely to decide whether this lands.
Thirty-Eight Years Between Sequels
Gremlins 2: The New Batch came out in 1990. October 2028 puts thirty-eight years between installments, which is a long time for a property to sit while staying this recognizable. The 1984 film was violent enough that, alongside Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, it pushed the MPAA into inventing the PG-13 rating that summer. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, the 2023 animated prequel series, kept the brand warm enough that a third film stopped sounding far-fetched.
The archive has stayed busy too. In May, Joe Dante screened a roughly two-and-a-half-hour 1983 assembly cut of the original, an hour longer than the version that went out, from the only known surviving copy on his own VHS tape. It is now with The Gremlins Museum, the fan archive run by collector Ian Grant.
Two years is a long runway, and a studio that moves a date this far out usually knows something it has not said. What Warner Bros. has said is October 6, 2028, and that it still has Gizmo.
