That other Kaiju monster here to save the world is getting a Netflix series according to the Kadokawa Daiei Studio. Almost two decades have passed since we’ve seen the giant turtle, and it looks as though in 2023, he will rise above the cityscape once again.
No details about the project have been released. Whether this will be a movie, an animated series, or a live-action show are not apparent, but the big guy with the original “turtle power” is still popular and his return seems imminent.
In fact, Shusuke Kaneko who directed a trilogy of Gamera movies in the 90s: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion, and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris, wanted to reboot the monster himself, but the Netflix project was already underway.
“When I came up with the idea for Reiwa Gamera and made a proposal, KADOKAWA was already working on a new project,” he said (translated from Japanese by comicbook.com). “From my standpoint, I’m like a baseball commentator with experience as a Gamera team manager, I would like to support the team until it wins the championship.”
For those who don’t know, Gamara is not a part of the Godzilla universe. The monsters are from rival studios (think DC and Marvel). Although a meet-cute between the two kaiju in one movie would be an amazing reveal, but the chances of that happening are probably low.
For now, we will have to wait for further details on this project, but it’s exciting news.
