From the visionary mind of J.A. Bayona, the director behind films like The Orphanage, A Monster Calls, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, comes a new survival thriller that promises to be a gripping retelling of a harrowing true story. Titled Society of the Snow, the film is set to premiere on Netflix (no official release date as of yet), with its World Premiere already scheduled at the Venice Film Festival on September 9, 2023. The film will also be showcased in the Pearl’s section at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Society of the Snow delves deep into the tragic events of 1972 when the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, met with a devastating crash in the heart of the Andes. Out of the 45 passengers onboard, only 29 survived. Stranded amidst the unforgiving terrains of the Andes, these survivors had to resort to unimaginable measures to keep the flicker of life burning.
What sets Society of the Snow apart from previous adaptations of this story, like Alive, is its commitment to authenticity. A YouTube commenter @CelesteBou recently shared insights from the actual survivors of the crash, revealing that many of them found this film to be a more realistic and true-to-life portrayal of their ordeal. The survivors have expressed their reservations about Alive, but have showered praises on Bayona’s rendition.
