When the trend of activewear dresses began to gain momentum in the fashion and fitness spheres, I made a personal vow to abstain from participating. It wasn’t that I disliked how they looked on people, but I had a preconceived notion that wearing one would make me look like a lost tennis player. But after months of rolling my eyes at the different brands releasing their own iterations of the dress craze, I came across the Old Navy PowerSoft Sleeveless Shelf-Bra Support Dress ($60; plus an extra 20 percent off in cart), and something changed. Unlike many of the ultra preppy and feminine styles on the market, characterized by flouncy skirts and pastel hues, this dress evoked a minimalist aesthetic that I loved. I thought, “what the heck,” and added it to my virtual shopping cart, opting for a size small and tall. Read more about my experience putting it to the test ahead.

What I Love About the Old Navy PowerSoft Sleeveless Shelf-Bra Support Dress

To my surprise, I must confess that I adore this activewear dress far beyond my initial expectations. First and foremost, the fabric reminds me of my all-time favorite Old Navy leggings — stretchy, lightly compressive, and boasting loungewear-like comfort. The built-in skort bodysuit offers extra support and coverage, while the vented side slits for airflow and a touch of style.

If I had to choose one favorite detail, it would be the square neck. I’ve always been drawn to this particular neckline, and it didn’t disappoint in this silhouette. A close second is the hidden pocket in the built-in shorts, perfect for stowing your keys, phone, and license during walks. These features are just a few reasons why I’ll be wearing this dress on repeat all summer long.

What’s Worth Noting About the Old Navy PowerSoft Sleeveless Shelf-Bra Support Dress

One thing worth noting about this dress, specifically the white version, is that the beige cups are visible through the fabric. Because of that, I decided to remove them and found that the built-in shelf bra still provided medium support for my 34C chest. While I can’t speak to whether the cups are visible through the dark-colored versions, it’s worth noting that a few Old Navy shoppers mentioned seeing them through the pastel lavender style as well. Clearly, the cups spark mixed reviews. One reviewer noted: “The cups need constant adjusting. I wish there was a way to set them in place. I have to fix them every time I go to the restroom.” Another reviewer echoed their sentiment, writing: “Only problem I’ve run into is the removable cups in the built in bra sometimes fold when I pull the dress down to use the restroom, requiring me to adjust them.”

Who Is the Old Navy PowerSoft Sleeveless Shelf-Bra Support Dress For?

This style is ideal for those looking to ease into the activewear dress trend. Its design is straightforward enough to wear while running errands or going for a leisurely stroll. Or, you can elevate the look by accessorizing it with jewelry, a baseball cap, and a crossbody bag for a chic and relaxed summer ensemble.
