Interview with Pearl Beacon, Author of Ancient Souls

master mentalism tricks

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Ancient Souls #1 – Karma’s Return?

Karma’s Return is my debut novel that I wrote with my mother, Elin Peer. She’s a very successful author with a large following of readers and more than thirty books to her name. For the past four years, I’ve helped her plot her books and all that time, we have talked about one day writing together.

The idea behind the Ancient Souls trilogy came to me while I was in school. As a high school student, I experienced a feeling of loneliness among my peers. Not that I was unpopular, but everyone around me was so busy getting attention and being heard that they never stopped to listen. We were connected through social media and yet more disconnected than any generation before us. I started to observe and wonder what someone wise and ancient would do if they were dumped right into a modern high school. That’s how the idea of Karma’s Return was born.

I also think that’s why the book has connected to people of all ages. It’s set at a high school but asks the question of mature readers with life experience: What would you do if you could go back to high school knowing what you know now?

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I like books with a psychological twist that leave you thinking about them long after you finish the book.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m in the middle of a Stephen King’s book, The Eyes of the Dragon, which isn’t horror like his other books.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The one where Emma visits her grandma in a different realm. That scene was special because I channeled it, meaning that I opened up to my spirit guides and allowed them to help me write that chapter. It’s my favorite because when my mother read it, she began to cry and didn’t change a thing.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My favorite time to write is when it’s raining outside. I also like to listen to classical music.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My room used to be full of quotes on my walls when I was younger. Now my philosophy is simply that I stick to the golden rule of treating others like I want to be treated. I will say though that I’ve learned a lot from being a conduit between people and their spirit guides.

My spiritual journey started early because I was born with the ability to see spirits. It freaked out my parents and used to be our family secret. My father who is an engineer tried to find natural causes for the phenomena that occurred in our house, until one day when he and my sister saw the same spirit as me. Today, I’ve learned how to control my abilities and I’ve chosen to focus on communicating with spirit guides. They are wise beyond anything and I’m grateful for their help when I’m writing.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That challenges don’t happen to you but for you and that sometimes rejection is actually a protection.
