Pixar’s groundbreaking 1995 animated movie Toy Story could easily have been a one-and-done film. Instead, by 2010 it had transformed into a near-perfect trilogy, capped off by the emotional masterpiece that is Toy Story 3. It also made a hell of a lot of money, meaning it was inevitable Disney would drag the toy box out again at some point. And so in 2019 we received Toy Story 4. While the film wasn’t necessarily bad by any means, and has grown more appreciated over time, many fans have accused it of assassinating the original characters’ personalities. Some find it forgettable, but most agree it simply didn’t need to be made following Toy Story 3’s impactful conclusion. Now, with a fifth Toy Story on the way, it seems playtime could drag out forever, as long as these toys keep making money.

If you’ve never seen the original Mad Max, you might be shocked how little it resembles the recent Mad Max: Fury Road or Furiosa. The first film was a tiny Australian independent, and it was set during the collapse of society, rather than after it in its freaky ruins. It’s got a lot less science-fiction, far less action, and almost none of the gonzo production and character design people have come to expect from Mad Max. (Max’s family is still alive for most of the movie too.)

Most of those signature Max elements were introduced by the sequel, Mad Max 2 (mostly known in the U.S. as The Road Warrior), which takes place after the world has been destroyed and now features Max wandering the wasteland in search of gasoline. The action is bigger, the stunts are wilder, and the characters are even more deranged. (I’m looking at you, Lord Humungus.)
