From May 1977 on, a large segment of the American entertainment industry became fixated on answering one question: “What’s the next Star Wars?”So many science-fiction movies were made over the next decade or so purely because someone thought anything with monsters and robots in space would make hundreds of millions of dollars. Accordingly, many movies that had no business getting toy lines for children got them anyway — like David Lynch’s Dune, which is bizarre and obtuse and off-putting.
