An actor from The Princess Diaries reportedly had a run-in with the law recently. Erik von Detten, who also voiced the character of Sid in Toy Story, is being sued over allegations of elder abuse and fraud, according to recent reports.
According to court documents reviewed by USA Today, an elderly couple filed a lawsuit against von Detten and Rosland Capital LLC on May 11 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging they paid about $2.1 million for gold coins worth only $1.3 million. Rosland Capital is the precious metals company for which von Detten worked as a broker.
The plaintiffs in the case are Sheila, 85, and Norman Greenberg, 97, a married couple living in La Jolla, California. The outlet reports that the elderly couple is seeking $900,000 in damages and wants to recover their losses, along with punitive damages.

What the lawsuit alleges about Erik von Detten’s gold coin sales
The complaint filed by the Greenbergs lists five claims against von Detten and Rosland Capital. The claims include violations of California’s Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act, intentional misrepresentation or concealment, breach of fiduciary duty, constructive fraud, and conversion.
According to the couple, their dealings with Rosland Capital began in 2020, after they saw a television advertisement and contacted the precious metals company. They were subsequently connected with von Detten. The Greenbergs claim they told von Detten they had approximately $2 million in retirement accounts but knew little about gold.
The complaint alleges that the couple initially placed two orders for Lady Liberty gold coins totaling roughly $1 million. The coins were allegedly sent to Delaware Depository for storage rather than delivered to the Greenbergs. The couple claims they paid recurring storage and account-maintenance fees to the companies.
After this purchase, von Detten is alleged to have later purchased approximately $1 million in additional coins. As per the elderly couple’s accusations, they reportedly paid far more than the coins were worth due to substantial markups. The Greenbergs also accuse Rosland of capitalizing on older customers’ financial concerns by promoting gold and other precious metals as stable investments.
Following the lawsuit, Rosland Capital is said to have filed for bankruptcy. The plaintiffs have requested a jury trial. Court records list the case as pending. According to court records, a case management conference is scheduled for November 9 at 8:30 a.m. in Santa Monica for this suit.
