When teachers and romance novels appear in the same sentence, I bet nine out of ten romance readers think of student/teacher tropes. Theoretically, I understand the appeal of this popular pairing. Student/teacher romances promise forbidden love, sneaking around, and shared intellectual passion. But along with these come an imbalance of power, age gaps, and, often, behavior that can feel like grooming. Romance novels allow readers to explore taboos in safe, fictional worlds where we all know that everything will work out and the characters will get a happy ending. And many authors play with the power dynamics of their student/teacher characters to show that the relationships are not toxic or harmful. Teachers and students can meet outside of school first without realizing their academic relationship, or one of them can remove themself from class. These stories almost always are set in college or graduate school, to ensure both love interests are adults capable of giving consent.
Even so, ever since I became a teacher, this is one type of romance novel I have a really hard time reading. So I have to sit this trope out 99% of the time. But teachers still deserve romance stories, and I still love reading about them. Since so many teacher romances take place on a college campus, I wanted to highlight romances featuring K-12 educators. In my real life, and in books, I love watching teachers fall in love: with each other, with parents of students, and with people in completely different professions. Here are five of my favorite teacher romance novels featuring flirty banter over the school copy machine, longing glances over finger painting, happily ever afters for the people who deserve them most…and absolutely NO romances with students.
Romance Novels with Teacher Leads
The Love Simulation by Etta Easton
Etta is a dedicated middle school vice principal who joins a six-week Mars simulation to compete for a cash prize she needs to upgrade the school library. When science teacher Roman joins her team, at first she thinks he must be there to sabotage her chances. They’ve had an occasionally flirtatious, frenemy relationship all year. And he’s the son of her football-obsessed principal. But day by day, he proves how dedicated he is to this project and the school, and the feelings and attraction between them are definitely growing. But Etta still can’t shake the feeling that this cute science teacher is hiding something from her. This book is perfect for any romance readers who wanted to go to space camp. And I, personally, loved reading about a female vice principal!
The Partner Plot by Kristina Forest
In book two of the Greene Sisters Trilogy, Violet and Xavier are former high school loves who come back together through a (fake) Las Vegas marriage of convenience. One big reason they didn’t stay together past high school is they each wanted to follow their big dreams: Violet to become a celebrity stylist and Xavier to play professional basketball. A central tension throughout the story is that while Violet achieved her dream, Xavier didn’t and is now teaching English and coaching high school basketball. He needs to work through his own feelings of disappointment and inferiority in order to become a steady partner for Violet, and part of that process is deciding if teaching can be his new dream and stop feeling like his fallback, second choice. Forest delivers deep characterization and tropes on tropes on tropes in this beautiful second chance love story.

Teacher of the Year by M.A. Wardell
Being an amazing kindergarten teacher is basically Marvin’s whole life. And this year, he’s determined to win the coveted Teacher of the Year Award. But when a new student with a very attractive single dad joins the class, Marvin begins to wonder if he deserves a life outside the classroom as well. A friendship develops and then turns into something more between Marvin and Olan. But dating a student’s parent might jeopardize his chances of winning the award that will help his school and give him the recognition he desperately wants. While this book is relatively low conflict overall, there are lots of sweet romantic scenes throughout that make it a perfect cozy, low-stakes read.
What You Wish For by Katherine Center
When the beloved principal dies at her quirky, arts-focused school, librarian Samantha is determined to keep the mission of the school going. But the replacement principal, Duncan, who just happens to be Sam’s most embarrassing, unrequited crush from her old job, wants to paint the walls grey and turn the school into a disciplined, high-tech environment. Sam tries to remind Duncan of the fun-loving, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing teacher he was before at his old job. In the process, her crush reignites—only this time, it’s not unrequited. But further tragedy in their community has Duncan and Sam doubting both their relationship and their place in the school.
Vision in White by Nora Roberts
I couldn’t resist putting one of my favorite Nora Roberts novels on the list. Mackenzie is a photographer who works with her three best friends to make brides’ dream weddings become a reality. Ironically, Mac is also a commitment-phobe who doesn’t believe in a happily ever after for herself. Carter is a nerdy, earnest English teacher who had a desperate crush on Mac when they were both in high school. She agrees to a fling, nothing more. But Carter is determined to break down the walls she’s had up since her parents’ divorce in childhood and develop a real, head-over-heels in love, forever kind of relationship with her. Swoon!
