Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel are the agents working the unexplained now. Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files to series, eight months after the streamer picked up the pilot.
The show follows two highly decorated but very different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond after they are assigned to a long-shuttered division that handles cases of unexplained phenomena. They are new characters rather than Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
Coogler Wrote and Directed the Pilot
Coogler wrote and directed the pilot and stays on as an executive producer. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people,” he said. Carter, who created the show for Fox in 1993 and ran it through nine seasons, two features and a two-season revival, is an executive producer here; his long-withheld R-rated cut of I Want to Believe surfaced earlier this year.

Jennifer Yale, whose credits include Outlander and See, is showrunner and an executive producer. Deadwyler and Patel executive produce as well, alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media. Onyx Collective and 20th Television are behind it. Ludwig Goransson, Coogler’s composer since Fruitvale Station, wrote the music for the pilot.
The Supporting Cast Runs Deep
Deadline’s report lists Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand and Sofia Grace Clifton in supporting roles. Madigan is coming off Weapons, where she played Aunt Gladys.
iHorror flagged the reboot as a possibility back in March 2023, and the pilot is now shot. Hulu has not dated the premiere, and no returning cast member from the original run has been announced.
