As was often the case inthe five previous entries in this parody franchise, the filmmakers’ comic strategyresembles Shaquille O’Neal’s approach at the foul line: Take ten shots and hope to hit three of them. Unlike some of their targets in prior movies, most of the objects of mockery are pretty good films — many far better uses of a viewer’s time than this newScary Movie.

Mercifully, thereturning stars includeScary Movie’s two most reliable performers, Anna Faris and Regina Hall.Thegags supplied by the Wayans — Marlon, Shawn, Craig, and Keenen Ivory Wayans wrote the screenplay with Rick Alvarez — lean heavily on sprinkling recreations ofother movies with cheap shots at peopleof various differences. I could try to summarize the plot, but why dedicate more time to trying to explain what happens than the filmmakers did? This sequel follows the basic contours of 2022’sScream,with frequent digressions into other parodies. It‘s that sort of movie, like the raw notes from a writers’ room brainstorming session transcribed and filmed with no concern for any sort of connective tissue. A smattering of jokes work — I liked the deadpan homage to theFinal Destinationseries, andthe broadside aimed at the recent Michael Jackson biopic — and some are absolutely brutal. (If you’re going to make fun of bad Twitch streams, you’d better be funnier than an actual Twitch stream, a barScary Moviefails to clear.) I laughed occasionally, mostly at Faris and Hall (who should really make a movie together that’s not a Scary Movie) but not enough to recommend the film. But, again, Iwas almost certainly more sober than its creators intended when I saw it.

From slow-burn, arthouse horror films that bored viewers to campy cult classics some moviegoers just didn’t get at first, here are 10 great horror movies audiences were wrong about at first.

Jennifer’s Body (2009)”,”photo-description”:”
Audiences just didn’t get Karyn Kusama’s Jennifer’s Body when it hit theaters in 2009. The movie follows a teenage girl named Jennifer who turns into a demonic succubus after a violent botched ritual, as well as her best friend Needy who is horrified when she discovers Jennifer is literally eating their male classmates to survive. Those expecting a sexy slasher were instead treated to a campy horror comedy underscored by sharp social commentary, and unfortunately it seemed to go over many viewers’ heads at the time. A poor marketing campaign targeting young men didn’t help either, but thankfully, the film has earned cult status in the years since it was released, with a new appreciation for its ahead-of-its-time feminist themes and tongue-in-cheek late 2000s pop culture.
