It was Agatha all along! Kathryn Hahn‘s delightful villain left WandaVision fans wanting more, and they’ll get their wish with the spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
The Disney+ series, first announced under the title Agatha: House of Harkness in November 2021, will feature even more magical women. Patti Lupone revealed that she and Aubrey Plaza joined the cast as members of Agatha’s circle of sorceresses.
“It’s a coven of witches, and I play Lilia Calderu, who apparently is in the Marvel [Cinematic Universe]. I researched her, and she’s hot! She’s really hot! She’s got a great body and raven hair,” LuPone said during an April 2023 appearance on The View.
She continued: “I didn’t know there were witches, I didn’t know anything about the Marvel world. There are witches in the Marvel world. So, we are a coven of witches and the witches are: Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, and the Familiar — if anybody knows Heartstopper — is Joe Locke. And then Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn and myself.”
Agatha will likely need a few powerful allies to help her break the Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) spell. In the final episode of WandaVision, which aired in March 2021, Wanda decided that Agatha’s punishment for trying to steal her powers would be “the role you chose: the nosy neighbor.” The ancient witch was suddenly forced to be Agnes, the cheerful townsperson that charmed her way into Wanda’s life.
It sounds like Agatha’s coven are pretty powerful. LuPone described Lilia Calderu as “a 450-year-old Sicilian witch whose power is divination and whose trial is tarot.” She added, “It’s very interesting. I think it’s going to be fantastic.”
Hahn, meanwhile, has been tight-lipped about what to expect from the Disney+ TV show, which started filming in Georgia in early 2023. However, the star dished on what she was most excited to revisit from WandaVision.
“Her costumes and her nails. They’re fabulous,” the Tiny Beautiful Things star told TVLine in January 2023. “And who knows, there may be a little song here or there … but no one is saying anything about that — certainly not me!”
WandaVision viewers will remember when the show revealed Agatha’s role as a villain with the catchy musical number “Agatha All Along,” which was nominated for a Creative Arts Emmy and Grammy Award. Meanwhile, LuPone’s status as a Broadway musical legend certainly has fans speculating about another possible musical sequence.
