Speedy Ortiz founder and frontwoman Sadie Dupuis has always loved comics, so when she spotted a French language version of Ghost World as a tween, she didn’t let the language barrier stand her way.

On this episode of The Spark Parade, Dupuis explains how her connection grew even deeper when she bought a copy in English and why she felt such an immediate kinship with its teenage protagonists.

“What I really like about Ghost World is that it is never at all condescending to these characters,” she explains. “They are so astute and sharp and [moments of insecurity] are treated with such seriousness and care.”

Though she was initially disappointed by Terry Zwigoff’s film adaptation (a radical departure from the source material), she has since come to appreciate it as an alternate version of the same events. It now stands as yet another aspect of the Ghost World universe of which she can’t get enough.
