People like to make fun of “the cell phones are bad show” for its almost comedically oppressive gloom and doom about the future, but as the future grows ever more gloomy, even the haters have to admit that Black Mirror was on to something. The series, formerly of Britain’s Channel 4 and now a Netflix Original, uses its anthology format to spin tales of people with chips in their heads that make them miserable, people who play computer games that make them miserable, people who use social media apps that make them miserable, etc. Sure, a lot of it is very obvious and predictable, but it’s also completely unafraid to go to the darkest place possible with many of its episodes. Stories like “Playtest,” “White Bear,” “The Waldo Moment,” and “Common People” challenge our expectations of how violent, shocking, and depressing a TV show could possibly get.
