Terror Films And Microhouse Films Take Indie Horror Vertical

Terror Films Releasing has teamed up with Microhouse Films, the mobile-first vertical platform that launched July 7, and it is bringing horror along for the ride. The indie genre distributor behind the Hell House LLC franchise, Patient Seven, The Taking of Deborah Logan and Savageland is putting select titles on the phone-shaped format, starting with two new films dropped in an exclusive window to mark the platform’s debut.

If you have not been tracking the microdrama boom, here is the short version. Microhouse Films is the vertical studio launched by actor Taye Diggs with partners Autumn Federici, Shelby Stone, James Black and Troy Brookins. It arrived July 7 with seven original series and a pitch aimed straight at creators. No subscription fee. No fee to upload or host. An ad-free, credit-based model where filmmakers decide which episodes stay free and which sit behind credits, and pricing, release strategy and revenue stay with the person who made the thing. That last part is worth reading twice if you make small horror movies for a living.

Vertical video has spent the last couple of years turning into a genuine gold rush, mostly on the backs of soapy microdramas built for a thumb and a commute. Horror showing up this early is not a shock if you know the genre at all. Horror is always first through the door on a new format. It colonized VHS, then YouTube, then found footage, then screenlife, and it usually did it with no money and a lot of nerve. A phone held upright is just the next doorway.

The two launch films fit through it almost too neatly.

Episode 12

Episode 12, directed by Shawn Robinson, runs on a hook made for a screen you hold in your hand. On June 6, 2023, a television show called Paranormal Closure was pulled from every broadcast station at once with no official explanation. A year later a video surfaces online claiming to be from an episode that never aired. That is pure analog-horror bloodstock, the lost-broadcast, something-leaked-that-should-not-exist strain that already lives on phones and in the middle of the night.

Beliath

Beliath, directed by Cristian Peters, starts as a routine crime report and slides somewhere much worse. Folklore, buried cults, and the kind of discoveries that quietly rewrite a reporter into an obsessive. The line between journalism and compulsion is a dependable horror engine, and a story about someone who cannot stop looking is a fitting first move for a platform built on the same reflex.

Why an Indie Horror Distributor Cares About Your Phone

Terror Films has spent years as one of the steadier homes for small genre films that might otherwise disappear. CEO Joe Dain called the rise of the micro vertical format “one of the biggest shifts in digital media since streaming began,” and framed the deal as a way to get his filmmakers’ work to a much larger audience in a format people already live inside. Microhouse co-founder Autumn Federici pointed to Terror Films’ long record with independent filmmakers as the reason the partnership made sense, and to the chance to open another revenue lane for the people who actually shot the films.

The part worth watching is the money and the control. Independent horror has always had a distribution problem more than a talent problem, and a platform that charges filmmakers nothing to host, keeps the whole thing ad-free, and lets them set their own prices is at least a different shape of deal than the usual take-it-or-leave-it. The open question is whether audiences will sit with a full horror film in vertical, a few minutes at a time. The format has already proven it can sell a cliffhanger. Dread is a harder thing to sell in ninety-second pieces. That is the experiment, and Terror Films is running it in public.

How to Watch

Both films are exclusive to Microhouse for now and roll out across other digital platforms sometime in late August. The app is free to download on the App Store and Google Play, with a free preview on the Microhouse site. Terror Films also has Terror Tales: Poetry & Death Volume One and Restitution on the platform, plus two documentaries, 22 and Unmasking Monsters Below, from its sister label Global Digital Releasing.

Horror got to the vertical party early, the way it always does. Now it finds out whether fear scrolls.
