There are so many books coming out each week that I don’t always get to highlight them on their particular release date, but this 700-plus page history of Mexico is definitely something to know about. In it, prize-winning historian Paul Gillingham details how the year 1511 set life in the Americas—and the world at large—on a totally new trajectory. A shipwreck of Spanish sailors led to later conquerors witnessing Tenochtitlán, the biggest and most sophisticated city they’d ever seen, and being introduced to things like chocolate and tomatoes, while Mexicans got horses…and lethal germs.
