The Entire Walking Dead Universe Is Consolidating on Netflix and AMC+

The zombie apocalypse is about to get a lot easier to binge. On July 30 Netflix and AMC Global Media announced a multiyear global licensing agreement that gives both companies co-exclusive streaming rights to the original The Walking Dead and all six of its television spinoffs. That means Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, The Walking Dead: World Beyond and Tales of the Walking Dead all land under the same arrangement.

Seven shows. 371 episodes. The expanded deal starts in 2027, when the spinoffs arrive on Netflix globally and on AMC+ where available. Netflix has carried the original series in the United States since 2011, and this agreement widens that footprint into new territories including the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia and New Zealand. The original show also comes to AMC+ for the first time in early 2027. Sit with that one for a second. AMC has spent roughly fifteen years unable to stream its own defining series on its own platform.

One Library Instead of Seven Scattered Pieces

The Entire Walking Dead Universe Is Consolidating on Netflix and AMC+

Streaming has never been kind to sprawling franchises. Rights get sliced by title, by territory and by window, so a viewer in one country gets three of the shows while a viewer in another gets two entirely different ones and almost nobody gets the whole set. The Walking Dead universe has been a particularly tangled example, mostly because it kept growing across more than a decade while the streaming business rearranged itself underneath it. This agreement treats the franchise as one library rather than seven separate assets, and that is the actual news here.

Kristin Dolan, CEO of AMC Global Media, said in the announcement that the deal creates a global destination for the universe with “all shows, all episodes.” That is corporate phrasing, but it describes the shape of the thing accurately. 371 episodes is enough material to function as its own streaming service. Very few horror properties carry that kind of volume. Fewer still have ever had it gathered in one place.

The Reported Price and What It Says About Aging Horror

Variety reports that the agreement is a five-year deal valued at approximately $500 million. Neither Netflix nor AMC has publicly confirmed the duration or the figure. The official announcement describes it only as a multiyear agreement and leaves the financial terms alone, so the number belongs to Variety’s reporting rather than to either company.

Take the reported figure at face value and it says something specific about the value of a horror franchise that already ended. The original series wrapped in 2022 after eleven seasons and 177 episodes. Its characters kept working. Its mythology kept expanding through spinoffs. New viewers kept finding season one on streaming years after the finale aired. Lori Conkling, Vice President of Licensing at Netflix, said the company is excited to “expand that access to more audiences around the world,” noting that the show has been attracting new fans on the service for nearly fifteen years. Horror has always had a long tail. This is a nine-figure bet on that tail.

Good News for Anyone Starting From Zero

There is a decent irony in a franchise about survivors barricading themselves into isolated settlements spending most of a decade divided across separate streaming territories and licensing windows. The practical effect on viewers is the part that matters. Anyone who has tried to explain the viewing order to a curious friend knows the problem. World Beyond hangs off a plot thread from the mothership. The Ones Who Live resolves a departure that happened seasons earlier. Dead City assumes you already know who Negan is and why that matters. None of it holds together when the shows live on four different services in three different countries.

Consolidation does not fix the narrative sprawl, but it removes the logistical excuse. A newcomer can start at the beginning and keep going without hunting down a separate subscription for every branch of the family tree. For a franchise this dependent on continuity and returning characters, that is worth considerably more than another marketing push. It also gives AMC+ something it has never had, which is the front door to its own house.

The rollout begins in 2027 and it will not happen everywhere at once. Licenses for each series start on different dates in different territories as existing streaming agreements expire, so what shows up and when will depend on where a viewer lives and which contract is still running there. Nobody should expect all 371 episodes to appear on a single morning. What viewers should expect is that finding them stops being a scavenger hunt.
