Spielberg’s first big-screen feature seems calculated to build on the reputation he had earned with his early standout TV film Duel as a clever choreographer of car action. It follows a woman (Goldie Hawn) who busts her husband (William Atherton) out of prison so they can retrieve their son from a foster home. A slow-motion chase across the state of Texas ensues, along with some of Spielberg’s funniest moments and a very effective finale. His work was still rough around the edges, but even at this early date, Spielberg was obviously a star on the rise.

As of this writing, Jurassic World is the tenth-highest grossing film in the history of cinema, with $1.67 billion in worldwide ticket sales. It not only tops all the other films in the franchise (including the original), it earned more money than such popular hits as The Avengers, Barbie, and both Frozen films. Jurassic World relaunched a franchise that most people had written off, sparking at least three more sequels, plus several animated TV series. It also got generally positive reviews from critics, and it holds a positive average score on Letterboxd. And it is … an inherently dumb premise filled with not-very-bright characters who almost seem to want to be eaten by dinosaurs given the choices they make? I still don’t understand why you would genetically engineer any dinosaur that would be especially smart and violent under any circumstances; much less why you would give what is ostensibly a billion-dollar zoo animal magical camouflage powers. (What good is a dinosaur as a theme park attraction if no one can see it?!?) I love a good disaster film as much as the next guy, but we all deserve better than this.
