Terror Films Releasing is not premiering a new movie on September 25, 2026. It is resurrecting one. The Night Marchers arrives worldwide on Tubi, Chilling, The Roku Channel, Fandango at Home, sold on footage from a crew that vanished 25 years ago. This is a 2001 film. It opened in Hawaii on February 16 of that year, runs about 67 minutes, and cost roughly $40,000. Twin brothers Blake and Brent Cousins wrote and directed, and star alongside twins Kevin and Kelvin Antonio. A documentary crew investigates the legend of the Night Marchers, goes missing, and the story arrives through their tapes.
The Blair Witch Project came first and the resemblance is not subtle. Honolulu Star-Bulletin reporting put the shoot at roughly October 1999 through February 2001, almost all of it inside the Blair Witch window, though Blake Cousins said at the time they had used handheld footage before Blair Witch opened. Burl Burlingame’s 2001 Star-Bulletin review went after the imitation, the improvised dialogue and the amateurism, while allowing that the cast was convincing when frightened, that a couple of shocks landed, and that the film did what it set out to do. But found footage had no rulebook in 2001. Two brothers with $40,000 were guessing, and the rawness that reads as incompetence now was the normal condition of the format.
Hawaiian Horror Gives It an Identity of Its Own
Waipiʻo Valley, caves and lava tubes are not generic woods, and the Night Marchers are not an invented monster. They come from Hawaiian tradition, from accounts of processions associated with ancient warriors and aliʻi, beliefs that belong to a living culture. The Cousins brothers grew up in Hawaii, wanted horror built from legends local audiences already knew, consulted Hawaiian scholars along with Reynold and Abraham Kamakawiwoʻole, and framed the message as respect for Hawaiian culture and its people. In its first week at Kress Cinemas in Hilo it drew nearly three times as many viewers as Hannibal in the same multiplex. That is attendance at one theater, not national box office. The one week booking stretched to about a month, then to screenings elsewhere in Hawaii.
Too rough for masterpiece talk. The improvisation wanders, the effects are what $40,000 bought, and anyone raised on polished found footage will feel every limitation. Treat the stories of unexplained events on set as filmmaker anecdotes. But call it a cheap Blair Witch knockoff and you lose the better story: a tiny Hawaiian production that briefly outdrew Hannibal in its own town and survives as a snapshot of DIY horror at the start of the digital age.
