People (rightfully) love Terence Stamp and “Kneel before Zod!” so much that they give a pass to the rest of the movie, which is an absolute mess. It feels like some of the reason people are nostalgic for it is because they lump it in with their nostalgia for the first Christopher Reeve Superman — which is a much better movie.

Even the things that worked in the first Superman — like Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder’s screwball-comedy chemistry —feels off this time. Superman gets so obsessed with showing Lois his, uh, Fortress of Solitude that he is totally oblivious to three Kryptonian ubermensches conquering the planet! Doesn’t he have super-hearing? He’s got magic amnesia kisses, teleportation, and projectile chest emblems in this one; it feels like no super-hearing would be a weirdomission.
