Mariah Carey has spent three decades thawing out every December. Trixie Mattel looked at the calendar and spotted an unclaimed month. “I made a Halloween record because Mariah already copyrighted Christmas,” Mattel told iHorror. Somebody had to file the paperwork on October.
That record is ‘Till Death Do Us Part, a six-song release that arrived October 2 via PEG Records. Three days later she followed it with Trixie’s Halloween Mattelathon on her YouTube channel. The Mariah joke gets you in the door. What she said next is more interesting.
A Scare That’s Not on the News
The very next sentence in her answer is the real pitch. “BUT I also really love spooky shit and in 2026 we could use a scare that’s not on the news.” Half of that is a confession every horror fan could sign. The other half is a pretty bleak read on the year.
It’s also the oldest case anyone has made for our genre. Fictional fear has a running time and an exit. The headlines offer neither. Wanting a monster with an off switch is a perfectly reasonable request.
An Earnest Depressed White Boy From the Country
Before the pink and the punchlines, there was a guitar. “Before I was a hilarious drag queen I was an earnest depressed white boy from the country so I can’t help but make some sort of variation on that sound from my teenage years,” Mattel said. That sound has followed her since her 2017 debut, Two Birds. Halloween didn’t change her instincts. It gave them a costume.
Then she named her real influence. “I was always obsessed with girls with guitars and there’s always a way to keep something light but still have an honest candy core.” She is placing herself in a long line of women who wrote heartbreak with a wink and a strummed chord. “Honest candy core” is also a decent working definition of camp: a bright wrapper with something real inside.
Easier Than Crying on Camera
So what is the candy core here? “It’s really all about relationships,” Mattel said. “But like most things it’s easier to joke about serious feelings with spooky metaphors than it is to sit on camera and cry.”
Horror has run on that exact trade for about a century. Monsters carry what people won’t say out loud at dinner. Queer audiences in particular learned early to find themselves in the creature, the outsider, the thing kept in the attic. A breakup dressed as a ghost story is a very old trick, and the record’s first single is literally called “Ghost on the Moon.”
Crunching Leaves, Not Coffee Cups
Mattel isn’t aiming for one October. “I hope people pull it out every year for the season,” she said. That’s the Mariah plan, transplanted to fall. Holiday records survive on return visits.
She has thoughts on where this one should live. “Let this album be the crunching leaves beneath your feet! Let it replace the disposable coffee cups in your daily autumnal beverage!” That second line is either a sustainability pitch or a threat against pumpkin spice. Possibly both.
Scaring the Lights Out of You
She saved the sharpest bit for last. “And if you’re conservative, at least my album on the shelves might scare the lights out of you!” Drag has spent recent years cast as a villain in statehouses around the country, so the joke has a little blood on it.
Horror has always been good at revealing who’s afraid of whom. Mattel just flipped the casting. This October, the drag queen gets to be the monster on purpose.
