Starting things off with a film that immediately defies the form at every turn, Amadeus takes its plot inspiration not from the accomplished pianist himself, but from the guy who absolutely hated his guts. Miloš Forman’s film is told from the perspective of F. Murray Abraham’s Antonio Salieri, an accomplished Italian classical composer who is disgusted by the childish behavior of newcomer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) and unable to reconcile that with Amadeus’ obvious, raw, once-in-a-millennium talent. So, Salieri does the obvious thing: he plans to ruin his rival’s career. As we all can probably tell, it doesn’t work. The result is a riveting, somewhat historically accurate portrait of the depths of professional jealousy told not from the perspective of the “hero,” but from the one who would be by all accounts considered the villain.

There is a tendency to discount a shamelessly entertaining movie that you can watch 100 times out of pure pleasure when making a list like this because it’s not laden with provocative themes or high-minded metaphors. ButThe Fugitiveonly makes this sort of large-scale chase film look easy. In fact, it is incredibly difficult to take material like this, with such a taut mystery and such clear action scenes and such terrific performances, particularly from Tommy Lee Jones as the dogged U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard. The reason this movie is so much fun to watch over and over again is because it’s made with a level of skill and craftsmanship that’s rare even rarer now than it was in 1993.
