Remember last year’s controversy over The Brutalist where it was discovered that the filmmakers used AI to enhance Adrian Brody’s Hungarian accent in the film? Well, that’s chicken scratch compared to the sci-fi film Watch the Skies which not only steals Steven Spielberg’s original script title for E.T., but the jobs of several voice actors.
A.I. is here to stay. It’s learning things as we speak, in fact we are contributing to its intelligence by writing this. Additionally, many filmmakers are okay with using it as a tool just as long as it’s not abused. Question: is using the tech to dub an entire film a tool, or is it excessive? [It should be noted that as pointed out by one of our loyal readers, this technology is SAG-AFTRA approved. It uses the original actors voices, but manipulates their faces to match the mouth movements. That’s nice to know, however, some voice actors who rely on dubbing films for a living might take issue.]
On a separate note, the movie itself actually looks interesting: “A rebellious teenage woman’s father went missing years ago and she believes that he didn’t run away, but was abducted by aliens. She joins forces with a funky UFO club made up of a lovable group of weirdos and rejects. Together, they embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the boundaries of the law and ultimately, our world.”
Watch the Skies will get a theatrical release on May 9.
