Jim Field Smith on how Hijack Season 3 could continue
In an interview with Variety, Hijack co-creator and writer Jim Field Smith discussed how a potential third season could develop following the events of Season 2. He said the central question for a continuation would be whether there is “more story” for Sam Nelson after the revelations in the finale. Smith indicated that the narrative direction would determine whether another season moves forward.
George Kay and Jim Field Smith created the thriller series Hijack, which stars Idris Elba as corporate negotiator Sam Nelson. In the first season, Nelson deals with a hijacking aboard a commercial flight traveling from Dubai to London. In the second season, the story shifts to Berlin’s U-Bahn subway system, where Nelson appears to orchestrate a train hijacking while criminal forces coerce him.
Smith explained that any third season would depend on the relevance of the story rather than repeating the show’s premise. He said, “If Apple decide they want another bite of the ‘Hijack’ cherry, the question I will always ask is, what story is there for Sam?”
Smith added that a continuation would need to stay connected to the narrative threads established earlier.
He also said the setting of a future storyline could vary if the narrative demanded it. Smith said, “Of course, yeah, it could be on a boat. It could be on an e-bike, it could be in the back of a limo, it could be, you know, a submarine.” He added that the direction of the character’s story makes “the precinct kind of irrelevant.”
The Season 2 finale revealed that a key character orchestrated the Berlin train hijacking and Kai’s murder. Smith noted that the unresolved conflict between the two creates potential story paths for a continuation. He said any future season would have to remain directly connected to the previous events.
