5 Death Metal Bands Who Peaked on Their Last Album

master mentalism tricks

Sometimes it takes a whole career for a band to truly reach their peak and, for these five death metal bands, their final output ended up being the best release in their discography.

At The Gates and Bolt Thrower already have discographies full of classics, but everything came together in a way it never had before on their last effort. Then there are bands like Spawn Of Possession and Anata, whose final albums felt like a turn toward something even greater — but it was all cut short before they could tread that path more.

I’d also like to note that “peaked” is ultimately a subjective call. For me, it’s about a record’s quality relative to the rest of the band’s discography and how it fits into their history. For you, maybe it’s just the classics, or an album that holds deep sentimental value.

Oh, and four of the five ended up being Swedish, which wasn’t intentional — Sweden just has too many good bands.

Disclaimer: Necrophagist aren’t on here because a two-album catalog felt kind of weak to pull from for this list. We make the list, we make the rules!

Bolt Thrower, Those Once Loyal

Those Once Loyal is so good that Bolt Thrower literally couldn’t follow it up. Bolt Thrower ultimately scrapped plans for a new record in June 2008, saying, in part, at the time: “From day one we made it clear that we’d stop recording when we felt we’d written the ultimate Bolt Thrower album; we just never knew when that would be… But we have realized now that our last release, Those Once Loyal, turned out to be that album, and basically the new stuff we have written just doesn’t match up to it.”

Much like the Emperor of Mankind, Bolt Thrower are eternal.

Anata, The Conductor’s Departure

Swedish technical death metal band Anata never broke up — they just kind of stopped. But if their 2006 effort The Conductor’s Departure ends up being their final album, it’s the best one to go out on. It’s one of the most important and greatest technical death metal albums ever — from the varied musicianship to the constantly sharp writing, it deserves to be hailed alongside masterpieces from bandssuch as Necrophagist and Spawn of Possession.

Consider this my call for someone out there to reissue everything Anata ever did. They’re a band with two demos, a split album and four full-length records, all of which need to be jammed into as many ears as possible. I’ll also take that Anata record the band started recording in 2023 (apparently). But with two decades sinceThe Conductor’s Departure, we’re not counting on anything — until it’s not, this is their last album.

Spawn of Possession, Incurso

It’s a close race between Noctambulant and Incurso, but the latter edges out the former by just a smidge. Much like the Anata record above, it features some of the best writing in the entire genre. It’s close to an hour long and all that time simply flies by, even whenslamming the notes-per-second meter into the red.

Spawn Of Possessionwere working on a new album that was going to be called Retromorphosis after Incurso, but they broke up in 2017. In 2024, four of the five members reformed under the band name Retromorphosis — a nod to that unfinished album — featuring vocalist Dennis Röndum, guitarists Jonas Bryssling and Christian Münzner, bassist Erlend Caspersen, and new drummer KC Howard. Their debut album, Psalmus Mortis, came out in February 2025.

Edge Of Sanity, Crimson II

Edge Of Sanity released a string of classic records between 1991 and 1997, all with founding vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Dan Swanö at the helm. Swanö left in 1997, Edge Of Sanity releasedthe mediocreCryptic that same year and that was that.

Then in 2003, Swanö revived the outfit as a one-man band with a few guests and recorded the untouchable masterpiece that is Crimson II. The album follows up the story originally present on Edge Of Sanity’s 1996 album/songCrimsonand should be regarded as one of the greatest progressive metal albums ever recorded.

If you’re going anywhere near this masterpiece, make it the 2025 version. No more of those irritating crossfades muddying up the tracks — just Swanö’s own remix and remaster, done right.

At The Gates, The Ghost of a Future Dead

At The Gates obviously have their classic 1995 album Slaughter of the Soul, which had a heavy hand in launching metalcore. But I firmly believe that in terms of writing, flow, and encapsulating everything they’ve ever done into one perfect package, The Ghost of a Future Dead is the best At The Gates record. [Editor’s note: bold as all heck, but we’ll allow it.]

It’s also a testament to Anders Björler’s monstrous writing alongside the rest of his bandmates. Björler left At The Gates after their 2014 comeback album At War with Reality (the second best of the reunion records), and while At The Gates still put out two other fantastic records, that Björler magic really puts The Ghost of a Future Dead over the top from great to masterpiece. I have no idea if this will be the final At The Gates record now that Tomas Lindberg has passed, but if it is, it’s the right way to go out.

These bands all have the same thing in common: they started off playing death metal, but each eventually adopted a much different style.
