We all correctly assumed that Black Mirror would be the #1 show on Netflix’s Global charts this week. However, none of us could have predicted which episode from the sci-fi juggernaut’s 6th season would be the most popular one. However, according to IMDB, Joan Is Awful is that girl.

“An average woman is stunned to discover a global streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life — in which she’s portrayed by Hollywood A-lister Salma Hayek Pinault.”

The episode was directed by Ally Pankiw. The sci-fi anthology was created by Charlie Brooker, who also penned the episode. The powerhouse cast includes Annie Murphy, Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Ayo Edebiri, Wunmi Mosaku, and Lolly Adefope.
Twitter users had a field day with this meta episode. However, it also left them wishing they had paid more attention to Netflix’s terms and conditions when signing up for the streamer.

Whilst not having a classic Black Mirror bleak ending, the themes explored of privacy invasion, advanced AI, and the question ‘if you don’t own you, who does?’ fit well with the show. As a long-time Black Mirror stan account, I also had fun with this season’s premiere. I loved seeing all of these actors I love in a show that feels tailor-made for me. More importantly, I was relieved that we could still shake things up after 5 seasons and a Bandersnatch!
