Every week, Consequence’s Songs of the Week column spotlights great new songs from the previous seven days and takes a look at notable releases. Find our new favorites and more on our Top Songs playlist, and for other great songs from emerging artists, check out our New Sounds playlist. This week, Dolly Parton shares a heartfelt tribute to her late husband, Carl Dean.

“Like all great love stories, they never end,” Dolly Parton wrote when announcing “If You Hadn’t Been There,” her heartfelt dedication to her late husband Carl Dean. “They live on in memory and song.”

It’s a sweet sentiment that also speaks to the tradition of country music and Nashville, where Parton and Dean met and fell in love 61 years ago. Taking after an original Parton staple, “I Will Always Love You,” songs like “If You Hadn’t Been There” are meant to be shared, passed down, re-contextualized, and covered across time. It’s immensely personal for Parton, yes, but when listening to “If You Hadn’t Been There” — especially as that tear-jerking choir pops — there’s a universality to it. In fact, it’s not a stretch to picture the song soundtracking next year’s “In Memoriam” segment at the Grammys.

But beyond its touching balladry, “If You Hadn’t Been There” boasts a rawness that often comes with sudden, devastating loss. Parton’s voice shivers in the verses, sounding unable to divorce the words’ meanings from the memories attached to them. She croaks out the words “Your loving arms have cradled me” with the slightest of whimpers on the last line, as the image of Dean looms over each syllable.

Still, even in the song’s sappiest modes, Parton seizes her chance to bring grace and power. When she belts “And I believe” at the conclusion of the second verse, she summons the fiery, soaring vocal tone that has powered her since her earliest days. The bridge in particular is radiant, as she sings, “Oh you are my rock/ A soft place to land/ My wings, my confidence/ You understand.” She could have so easily offered a wallowing, weathered ballad, but her conviction and open-hearted delivery instead positions “If You Hadn’t Been There” as a gracious celebration of his life.

Given Dean’s very recent passing (Monday, March 3rd), it almost seems too soon for Parton to be back in the studio commemorating their 58-year-long marriage. It’s such a seismic loss for her that you’d almost understand if she had nothing to offer creatively, no way to express the grief and pain she’s been given. But Dolly has never been one to shy away and close herself off from emotion. The music, the work, gives it all meaning.

She may have lost her “rock,” but luckily, Dolly Parton has not lost her spark.
