After the intense werewolf transformation in 1981’s An American Werewolf in London, you can almost see a network exec wanting a piece of that and saying, “Let’s take a guy, have him transform into animals, and solve crimes,” because this was the ’80s and everyone solved crimes on TV. Well, that was the premise of Manimal, and it infamously lasted just eight episodes after being put up against — gulp — Dallas.

The Wizard of Oz, while never considered a horror movie (except for those of us who were terrified of the flying monkeys as children), had probably the most famous “cursed” production of any Hollywood film. The problems were varied and innumerable: two stars — Buddy Ebsen, the original Tin Man, and Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch — were poisoned by their makeup; a couple of flying monkey stunt actors fell when their wires broke; the Wicked Witch’s stunt double injured her leg when her broom exploded; and someone even stepped on one of the dogs that played Toto.
Many other stories from the set are apocryphal (none of the actors hanged themselves during production), but the chaotic environment invited plenty of chatter about how uniquely difficult it all felt — perhaps cursed. However, many of these problems can be chalked up not to a curse but to the fact that The Wizard of Oz was attempting to put things and techniques on film that had never been done before. It only makes sense that there would be some chaos here and there.
