Dolly Parton died Tuesday at 80, and the tributes pouring in have covered nearly every corner of American culture: the songs, the theme park, the Imagination Library, the wigs, the wit, the sheer unkillable warmth of her.
Horror fans have our own reason to raise a glass.
Because without Dolly Parton, there is a very real chance we never get Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Not “Dolly Parton once said something nice about the show.” Not a cameo. Dolly Parton was a co-owner of the production company that made Buffy — the movie, the series, the spinoff, and the revival that almost happened last year. Her name sat quietly in the corporate credits of one of the most influential horror franchises ever made, and most of the fandom had no idea for the better part of two decades.
It Started With a Movie Nobody Quite Got Right
Sandollar Productions co-financed the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer film alongside Kuzui Enterprises. Fran Rubel Kuzui directed. A young, then-unknown screenwriter named Joss Whedon wrote it.
The 1992 movie is a legitimately strange artifact: Kristy Swanson as Buffy, Luke Perry at the absolute peak of his 90210 fame, Donald Sutherland as her Watcher, Rutger Hauer as the head vampire, Paul Reubens as his sniveling henchman — and Hilary Swank in her film debut. Shot in five weeks, largely because Perry had to get back to Beverly Hills.
It made $16.6 million on a $7 million budget. Not a flop, not a phenomenon. Critics shrugged; it still sits at a rough 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Whedon famously hated what became of his script — the horror got sanded down into camp, and he’d later say the finished film left him thinking, “well, that’s not quite her.”
Most concepts die there. This one had a production company that hadn’t let go of it.
1997: Buffy Rises Again
Five years later, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on The WB with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the title role, and this time the horror stayed in.
Over seven seasons and 144 episodes — the last two on UPN — Buffy Summers and the Scooby Gang went to war with vampires, demons, a hell god, a killer robot, the floating grinning Gentlemen of “Hush,” grief, addiction, and roughly one apocalypse per graduation ceremony. It rewrote what television horror was allowed to be, and you can trace a straight line from Sunnydale to Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Stranger Things, Wednesday, and most of the genre TV that followed.
In the credits, alongside Mutant Enemy and 20th Century Fox Television: Sandollar Television.
Two years after that, Sandollar was back for Angel, the darker, noir-soaked, five-season spinoff that sent David Boreanaz’s brooding vampire to Los Angeles.
That’s two landmark supernatural series with Dolly Parton’s fingerprints on the paperwork.
Parton was never credited by name on either show, which is exactly why the connection stayed a piece of deep-cut trivia for so long. She wasn’t in the writers’ room. She wasn’t giving notes on the Master’s makeup. But she was an owner of the company that had the property, developed it, and kept it alive — which in television is not a small thing. It’s the whole thing.
“Dolly Parton Knows Who I Am and Thinks I’m Good”
The story finally broke containment in 2023, when Sarah Michelle Gellar brought it up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
“Little-known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer,” Gellar told him.
She then explained that the cast never actually saw her.
“We’d get Christmas gifts in the beginning that would have her name, and I would think, ‘She doesn’t know who I am.’”
She did.
“Then, one day, somebody asked [Parton] about it, and she complimented the show and my performance,” Gellar said. “And I was like, ‘Oh, I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.’”
Which is, frankly, the correct reaction.
She Was Still Attached Right Up Until the End
Here’s the part most of the obituaries won’t mention: Parton’s Buffyverse involvement wasn’t a 1990s footnote. It ran all the way to this year.
When Hulu developed Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale — the revival with Gellar returning as Buffy, Chloé Zhao directing the pilot, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new Slayer named Nova — Sandollar was attached, with Parton among the executive producers. The project was scrapped in March 2026, announced by Gellar herself on Instagram.
Thirty-four years after the 1992 movie, Dolly Parton was still, on paper, a producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Country Queen. Horror Queen.
Parton’s death was confirmed Tuesday by her family in a message posted to her social accounts. A cause has not been announced. She had spoken openly in recent months about “a few little health issues” and about being worn down by grief after the death of her husband of nearly 58 years, Carl Dean, in March 2025.
She was 80, and she leaves behind a catalog most artists would trade a limb for.
But she also leaves behind Sunnydale.
Dolly Parton is not the first name that comes to mind when you think about vampires, hellmouths, and small-town apocalypses. Maybe she should be higher on the list than she is. One of the biggest icons in American music quietly helped put a stake in the hand of the most important Slayer we ever got, and never once asked for credit on the screen.
So the next time you watch Buffy walk into a Sunnydale cemetery at night, stake up, one-liner loaded — remember there was a little Dollywood magic working behind the scenes the whole time.
