Halloween is almost here and the streaming services have clearly noticed. Every movie on this list arrives on Friday, October 23. That makes this weekend very easy to plan. We’ve got a new Shudder Original and a queer zombie comedy. There’s also a homemade nightmare from the woods, a Cronenberg classic and a British spoof that features cricket bats as a punchline.
All five are on subscription or free services. Nobody here gets quietly redirected to a rental page. Two of them stream on Kanopy, which costs nothing if your local library participates. Check your library card before you assume you’re out of luck.
The Cycle (2026)
Where to Stream: Shudder
Streaming Arrival: October 23, 2026
Jordan Downey made The Head Hunter and the “Stork” segment of V/H/S/Beyond. His new feature stars Deborah Ann Woll as Dr. Meg Garland, a forensic expert called to a horrific crime scene. One of the bodies there belongs to a man who disappeared 36 years earlier. He turns out to be her estranged father. Jeffrey Donovan plays a cop working the case. Downey wrote the script with his longtime collaborator Kevin Stewart, who also shot the film.
Stephen King called it The Thing meets The Silence of the Lambs. That pairing tells you the basic shape: a procedural with something much worse waiting underneath. The Cycle played Fantastic Fest before heading to Shudder, and the less you know going in, the better. Skip the deep-dive articles until after the credits. This is the pick for anyone who likes their cold cases with a supernatural streak.
Queens of the Dead (2025)
Where to Stream: Kanopy, free with a participating library card
Streaming Arrival: October 23, 2026
A drag show in a Brooklyn warehouse turns into a survival story when the dead start walking. Tina Romero directs from a script she co-wrote with Erin Judge. Katy O’Brian plays the stressed-out party organizer trying to hold the night together. Jaquel Spivey, Margaret Cho, Nina West and Cheyenne Jackson are in the ensemble, and Tom Savini turns up too. The film premiered at Tribeca in 2025.
Yes, Tina is George A. Romero’s daughter, and that will come up in every conversation about this movie. Her film has its own agenda though. It’s loud and funny. It cares far more about a squabbling group of queens and club kids putting their drama aside than about honoring anybody’s legacy. Put this one on with friends and some drinks. It’s the most party-friendly zombie movie on the list by a wide margin.
Sator (2019)
Where to Stream: Screambox
Streaming Arrival: October 23, 2026
Jordan Graham wrote, directed, shot, edited and scored Sator almost entirely by himself. The film follows a family living in isolation in the woods and the entity that has followed them for generations. What makes it stranger is where it came from. Graham’s grandmother June Peterson plays a version of herself. Her real accounts of contact with a presence she called Sator, and her own automatic writing, shaped the story. Peterson died in 2019, shortly before the film premiered.
Sator moves slowly and does not explain itself, which is the point. It’s the right choice for viewers who enjoy long silences, dark tree lines and a horror film that feels like it might be partly a family document. Anyone who needs a jump scare every ten minutes should look elsewhere.
The Brood (1979)
Where to Stream: Kanopy, free with a participating library card
Streaming Arrival: October 23, 2026
David Cronenberg’s early breakthrough stars Oliver Reed as Dr. Hal Raglan, a therapist running a radical treatment program at a remote institute. Samantha Eggar plays Nola, his most devoted patient. Art Hindle plays Frank, her estranged husband, who is trying to protect their five-year-old daughter as a string of brutal attacks closes in on the family.
The Brood still matters because it’s where Cronenberg’s two big obsessions first lock together. Psychological horror and body horror arrive in the same movie, and the result feels personal in a way his earlier films didn’t. Eggar’s performance also holds up. If you only know Cronenberg through The Fly or Videodrome, start here. Do yourself a favor and don’t look up the ending.
Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984)
Where to Stream: Screambox, also free with ads on Tubi
Streaming Arrival: October 23, 2026
This British horror spoof was built as a vehicle for TV comic Kenny Everett. Ray Cameron directed and co-wrote it with Barry Cryer. Everett and Pamela Stephenson lead a team of scientists investigating Headstone Manor, where 18 people were killed in a single night years earlier. Vincent Price appears as a satanic cult leader identified only as the Sinister Man.
This is your palate cleanser. The movie takes swings at Hammer and Alien among others. It also stages an entire gag around a cellar full of falling cricket bats. Its jokes run from clever to aggressively stupid, sometimes within one scene. If The Brood leaves you needing something less serious, this is it. Watching Vincent Price glower through this kind of nonsense is its own small Halloween treat.
That’s five movies, all arriving on the same Friday, with very different ideas about how to spend a weekend. Shudder also has two live events worth planning around. Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl host Joe Bob’s Halloween House Party on Friday at 9 PM Eastern. The double feature hasn’t been announced, so the surprise is part of the fun. It’s also one of the last two specials Joe Bob and Darcy have scheduled before they leave Shudder at the end of the year, so this Halloween party carries a little extra weight. On Sunday, Devon Sawa hosts the 2026 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards live at 9 PM Eastern. Between those two and the list above, your weekend is spoken for.
