Lanterns Season 2 is seemingly falling into place as the writers’ room just added a beloved Marvel and Star Wars writer. The update comes days before the first season’s finale, which will air on Sunday, Oct. 4.
Christopher Cantwell has joined Lanterns Season 2 as a writer, Nexus Point News reports. He is known for his comic writing work in Star Wars and Marvel, including Doctor Doom. Also known for co-creating Halt and Catch Fire, Cantwell joined the potential second season as a writer and executive producer in May.
Vanessa Baden Kelly returns as a writer for Season 2 along with newcomers like Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds. The five writers will work on drafting the story of next season under showrunner Chris Mundy. However, HBO has not officially renewed the show.
What else do we know about Lanterns Season 2 so far?
Despite no official renewal, the work behind a potential follow-up has been underway for months. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August, Mundy said, “We’re about six weeks into laying out a season, and then we’ll talk to folks about it really soon.”No scripts were written at that time.
In the same interview, the showrunner said plans are in place to tell the next chapter differently so it feels fresh, while keeping characters viewers know and care about. Mundy is the sole showrunner for the potential season. Co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King will not be returning for next season due to scheduling conflicts.
Lindelof also stated in an interview that Mundy has already started a writers’ room to develop new stories for Lanterns. While this early preparation does not guarantee a renewal, it ensures a faster production timeline if the series is greenlit.
The TV-MA-rated DCU show currently holds a 92% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart is expected to appear in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow in 2027.
